Thompson Coburn presents ‘The Wraparound’ at the 2022 CLOC Global Institute

How can a general counsel launch new technology within a corporate legal department while addressing the reluctance and fear that so frequently accompany change?

That’s the story that one visionary general counsel will share at Thompson Coburn’s session at the 2022 CLOC Global Institute, held in Las Vegas on May 9-12. The session, "The Wraparound: A Strategy to Launch New Technology Without Driving Lawyers Crazy," will be presented Wednesday, May 11, at noon in Monet 3 & 4 at the Bellagio.

As the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Thompson Coburn client VillageMD, a rapidly growing $1 billion health care company that provides value-based primary care, Wendy Rubas knew she had to find ways to work smarter and implement automation into her legal department. Along the way she learned hard lessons about how to wrap technology around department lawyers, gain buy-in from other business leads, and engage outside counsel in the process. 

In conversation with Thompson Coburn health care partner Eric Tower, Wendy will share practical lessons learned as she assembled a highly effective team and built automation into their work.

Wendy Rubas is the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of VillageMD, a rapidly expanding $1.3 billion health care company that, through its subsidiary Village Medical, provides value-based primary care services to 1.6 million patients in 15 markets across the country. Wendy is a veteran legal executive and champion of legal technology, analytics, and design who has launched major innovations within legal departments for more than 20 years. Since joining VillageMD in 2017, Wendy has played a central role in the company’s growth, including $6 billion in investments from Walgreens toward the development of a unique coordinated care model. Those investments will result in the opening of more than 1,000 Village Medical at Walgreens primary care and pharmacy practices by 2027, with more than half of those practices in medically underserved communities. Wendy is the host of the “VillageMD Working Smarter” podcast, which provides “never boring, sometimes funny” conversations about health care compliance.

Eric Tower is a partner with Thompson Coburn LLP in Chicago. He advises health care clients on a wide range of business-critical transactional and operational matters. Eric is a former executive and senior in-house counsel for Advocate Health Care, the largest health care system in Illinois, where he spent 16 years serving as a key business counselor and advisor to the system's leadership team and system boards on mergers and acquisitions, fraud and abuse compliance, physician practice acquisitions, financing, litigation, and corporate governance. He led mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures in excess of $15 billion and worked extensively with the system's nationally recognized population health management and managed care initiatives.
